By the Paint scheme it appears to be an old NACA chase plane from Drydon

This is P-51D, N74978, 44-74978 at Moojave Ca. c. 1980. It was used in a movie that was never completed. Three Mustangs were used, this one, N86JB and one other ID unknown. I shot all three on the ramp several times. The third Mustang did not remain at Mojave very long and none carried N numbers during filming. What gives this one away is the replaced tab on rudder. This Mustang had a code # 205 on the side I would have to look through the files to list the others. No idea as to what became of footage, never saw any used any where. This Mustang was w/o in the Shafter hanger fire. Saw remains after the fire was put out nothing left of her but a lump of metal.

This is Jack Sliker's Mustang that Mac McLain flew for "Com Tac 303" in the 70's which was a movie about the black fighter pilots in WW2. The movie was never finished.
